What do you think are the best elements of the math curriculum that your child needs to make his learning fun and easy? You may not have any clue. After all, math can be a difficult subject for any child, not just because of its difficult concepts but because of the mere subject itself. Math can be confusing, especially for younger children, and the more you try to make it simple, the more frustrating it becomes. So what can you do to ensure that your child enjoys his learning in math?
The first and most obvious part of a good math curriculum is the teaching methodology. You have to go to school knowing that you are being taught by someone who has the knowledge and skills to be able to help you out when it comes to making math fun. You have to believe in the teacher's competence to make math fun and challenging for your child. If you are not completely convinced about this, ask around. It will not be difficult to find people who are totally in support of the teaching methods you want your child to use in math class.
Another part of a great grade 4 math curriculum is the assessment and motivation that it provides for your child. There are various ways by which you can evaluate the learning style of your kid. Ask him how he feels when he learns a new concept in math. How does math feel when he is left on his own to figure it out on his own? This will give you an idea of how your child feels when learning math.
Kids are naturally curious and if you want to help them understand math better, you should let them take a part in the process. Tell him to use an equation, or show him an example. Let him try to solve some problems so that he will be able to grasp the concept better. Encourage your child to ask questions to get more information.
Your math curriculum should also focus on regular practice. You can make the learning process fun by making problems related to things that your child enjoys. For example, if he likes animals, you can make a picture math problem. If he loves construction, create a math worksheet with objects related to construction materials.
Remember that your child is just starting to learn the basic concepts of math. Do not overwhelm him right away. Instead, focus on the present and on how to make things easier for him. Encourage him to ask questions to make him understand the subject better.
